Leadership Students Take On Chi-Town

Wrigley FieldWhat do Chicago and Fort Worth have in common? Lots of proud Horned Frog alumni who support our students.

Juniors in the BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program met with TCU alumni and toured companies in Chicago over fall break to further develop their leadership skills and prepare them for a successful career.

“The point of the Chicago trip is to expose our students to a marketplace outside of the DFW area,” Kirsten Fishel, program manager for BNSF Next Generation Leadership, explained. Chicago is a natural fit because it is TCU’s biggest alumni contingency outside of the DFW area.

Students got to see business from a global perspective while interacting with executives from Wrigley Field, Grosvenor Capital Management, JPMorgan, Klein Tools, Starcom and Ulta Beauty.

The visit to JPMorgan stood out for accounting major Carter Wyrsch. “Everyone we met at the bank seemed very happy with their job and were more than willing to talk to us about career opportunities, and also our lives. The culture was one that promoted growth, and it was evident that the bank invested in their employees and facilitated success within them. It opened my eyes to banking and influenced me to possibly apply for an internship with the company.”

Finance major Travis Gauntt agreed. “What was particularly impressive about JP Morgan was that we were able to speak with people ranging from first-year analysts to board members. This panel provided a unique opportunity to hear from people with different leadership experience.”

The group also met with successful TCU alumni living in the Chicago area at a special alumni networking event.

“The Chicago trip was an amazing experience to bond with my cohort class, explore the city of Chicago, and learn about leadership through corporate site visits and from TCU alumni,” said finance major Kirby Schulz. “It was fascinating to get to meet with various prominent leaders in finance, marketing and supply chain companies. We all gained valuable knowledge from this trip.”
