DEAN AND ACCOUNTING PROFESSOR HOST NEELEY SCHOOL ALUMNI IN WASHINGTON DC

Accounting Professor Robert Vigeland, Neeley Alumni Professor of the Year, will host a networking event in Washington D.C., on Monday, February 28, 6:00-8:30 pm, at the National Press Club. Dr. Vigeland will discuss “Politics and Accounting: Strange Bedfellows.”

“Political forces are increasingly affecting accounting standards,” said Dr. Vigeland. “A recent example: the banking industry blamed the financial crisis on ‘mark-to-market’ accounting and used their influence to have congress force the FASB to change the standard. This is an alarming trend that any investor should be concerned about."

One of the most respected minds in accounting, Dr. Vigeland was honored in November with the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (TSCPA) 2010 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. The annual award honors Texans who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession.  Dr. Vigeland was noted for instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.

Dr. Vigeland, who is the 2010 Neeley Alumni Professor of the Year, has developed and taught several courses throughout his 21 years at TCU.  He led the effort to develop the Master of Accounting program in response to the 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA examination. Dr. Vigeland stresses the educational value of professional internships to his students and has developed a for-credit internship course.  He also developed a number of practical learning opportunities on a volunteer basis for students with not-for-profit entities in Fort Worth.

Cost to attend the Washington D.C. event is $20 and includes hors d’oeuvres, drinks and the presentation.
