Students Around the World Ready to Make a Profit While Making a Difference

TCU’s Values and Ventures Competition April 8-9 invites students from 49 universities to prove how they can combine a profitable idea with doing something meaningful.

By Elaine Cole

They come from as far away as Scotland and Indonesia, and as close as TCU and SMU.

They have a head for business, and a heart for humanity.

They have big plans for making a difference while making a profit, and on April 8-9, they are coming to TCU to vie for more than $70,000 in cash prizes to make those plans a reality.

The TCU Richards Barrentine Values and Ventures® Competition is not like any other college business plan competition. Students must present a plan for a for-profit business that benefits the community, the environment or a specific population either directly or indirectly. Past winners Spring Back Recycling are a great example.

The competition is presented each year by the TCU Neeley Entrepreneurship Center. It was founded by the NEC and Dallas real estate entrepreneurs Nancy Tartaglino Richards and Lisa Barrentine.

The 2016 competition will take place April 8-9 in the TCU Brown-Lupton University Union, with 49 teams competing and 50 business and civic leaders serving as judges and mentors.

All 49 teams will compete Friday morning, April 8, in seven simultaneous flights. The top team from each flight will advance to the finals Saturday morning, April 9.

Second-place teams from each flight will compete in a lightning round Friday afternoon. The top two teams from the lightning round will also compete in the finals on Saturday.

Adding another chance to win, all teams will compete in an elevator pitch competition Saturday.

Winners will be announced Saturday afternoon.
